Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)
April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Every year, The Rape Crisis Center hosts a variety of events to bring awareness to issues around sexual assault throughout the month of April.
Denim Day encourages the community at large to wear denim as a show of solidarity with victims of sexual violence everywhere. The day commemorates a decision by the Supreme Court of Italy, which overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans, and the panel concluded she must have assisted her attacker in taking them off, and therefore was consenting. This terrible decision brought worldwide attention to the rampant victim blaming that continues to occur with sexual assault.
We encourage businesses to offer employees an opportunity to wear denim to work that day, typically in the last week of April each year.
